Cuanlee, the first purpose built refuge in the country, opened
its doors in March 1979, with the specific purpose of dealing with families suffering
Domestic Violence.
The refuge was set up by a committee of business people, built
and furnished by the generosity of the Cork people. Since then Cuanlee Refuge has been jointly funded by the Southern Health Board, Cork City Council and Voluntary contributions. The latter incorporating fund-raising activities such as Flag Days, Church Gate Collections and Donations. Staffing consists of a management committee and a staff team who provide a 24 hour service, seven days per week plus a 24 hour telephone service. An outreach service is also provided. Cuanlee Refuge consists of six self-contained family units, relaxation areas, laundry facilities, playroom and outdoor play area. The aim of Cuanlee is to provide a safe environment where individualised care and support is offered, enabling empowerment.
Cuanlee functions as part of a community network of care and so
liaises with personnel within Social Services, Social Welfare Services, Public Health
Services, Legal Aid, Gardaí, Schools, Counselling Services, M.O.V.E., Men's
Project, A.A., I.S.P.C.C., Cork City Council and other refuges.
Origins of referrals vary from that of self referrals to those sent by other agencies such as Gardaí, Social Services, Legal Aid and other refuges.
